Weavers Demand 40% Wage Hike, Dhannipur Weavers\u2019 Struggle Committee Formed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concerns raised over Surat sarees being sold as Banarasi sarees; focus on strengthening the organisation to curb inflation and migration<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Varanasi: A significant meeting of weaver workers and artisans was held at Dhannipur village in the Lohta area of Varanasi under the chairmanship of village head Fakir Ali. The meeting discussed several pressing issues, including rising inflation, unemployment, migration of weavers, wages and the sale of Surat-made sarees as Banarasi sarees. During the meeting, the Weavers\u2019 Struggle Committee, Dhannipur, was formed to safeguard the interests of weavers and artisans.
Speakers expressed concern that several retail shopkeepers and traders in Banaras were allegedly selling sarees manufactured in Surat by presenting them as Banarasi sarees. They said this practice not only misleads customers but also damages the identity of Banarasi sarees and adversely affects the local weaving industry. They emphasised that the community must take this issue seriously.
Bismillah Ansari said that shortcomings on the part of both grihastas (traders who provide work to weavers) and artisans were affecting the weaving business. Councillor Ramzan Ali stressed the need to ensure compliance with prescribed wages and working hours under labour laws. He also called for attention to the legal aspects of copying designs and getting work done through others.
Councillor Haji Oqas Ansari highlighted the impact of rising inflation and said that socially responsible and financially capable members of the community should ensure at least a 40 per cent increase in artisans\u2019 wages.
Shamim Ansari suggested that weavers and artisans should form committees in their respective areas to strengthen their collective bargaining power. Fazlur Rahman Ansari said that migration among weavers could be stopped only when they united and raised their demands effectively. He added that a strong organisation could exert pressure for higher wages and solutions to other problems faced by the community.
Aqeel Ansari said that the biggest weakness within the community was a lack of unity. He urged weaver workers and grihastas to establish a strong organisation, similar to those in other trades, and raise their voices collectively for their rights.
Weavers\u2019 Struggle Committee, Dhannipur Formed
At the conclusion of the meeting, Idris Ansari expressed gratitude to all those present. Subsequently, the Weavers\u2019 Struggle Committee, Dhannipur, was formally constituted and entrusted with the responsibility of working towards a wage increase and resolving other problems faced by weavers and artisans.
The committee appointed Mubarak Ali as President, Afser Ahmad as Secretary and Lihaluddin as Treasurer.
The members of the committee include Samsuddin Mahto, Riyasat Ali, Arman Ali, Mubarak Baba, Islamuddin, Shabbir Ali, Mohammad Kaif, Mubarak Suja, Mainuddin alias Chhota Suja, Sultan Ansari and Jamal Akhtar.
Abdul Rab Ansari, Tafazzul Ansari, Mukhtar Ansari, Alam Ansari, Kavi Ansari, Sagir Ansari, Babu Ansari and several others were present at the meeting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
